Joe Rogan talks to Dennis McKenna about people who micro-dose psilocybin

In the video above, Joe Rogan talks to Dennis McKenna about people using psilocybin in small doses for its benefits. This also includes its use in different physical activities to aid in spiritual growth. According to Dennis McKenna, these things allow people to step out of their usual reference things, especially things that were initially suppressed.

He also highlights the need to be able to separate the self from the external environment. This is basically what psilocybin and similar substances can do. Dennis McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, researcher, lecturer, and author. He gave further accounts of the effects of combining psilocybin and movement and other experience in the YouTube video above.

Psilocybin Rewires the Brain for People with Depression

Psilocybin fosters greater connections between different regions of the brain in depressed people, freeing them up from long-held patterns of rumination and excessive self-focus, according to a new study by scientists at UC San Francisco and Imperial College London.

The discovery points toward a general mechanism through which psychedelics may be acting therapeutically on the brain to alleviate depression and possibly other psychiatric conditions that are marked by fixed patterns of thinking.

Depression:

The depressed brain encourages rigid thought patterns that impact well-being. This can be viewed as a “landscape” with deep wells that make it difficult for patients to “move between” different thoughts and perspectives. Image by Richard Daws, Kings College London

Psilocybin:

Psilocybin therapy “flattens” the brain’s landscape and “opens up” the rigidity of the depressed to allow new thoughts, insight, and perspectives to emerge. Image by Richard Daws, Kings College London

Enhanced Performance with the Usage of Microdosing

There are many physical activities that microdosing can help in boosting performance. A study using participants from different disciplines, including weightlifting, personal training, and yoga, highlights the effects of combining microdosing and movement. According to the study, microdosing increased the physical performance of 20 participants. The key benefits were increased concentration, coordination, and sensory awareness.

An article from the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies highlights the role of microdosing in extreme sports. These sports include skateboarding, surfing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and skiing. From the report, a cohort of 40 year olds used LSD for underground extreme sports and had better performance. This includes an increase in concentration, lightning speed, and better balance.

In conclusion, microdosing helps increase cognitive function and flexibility, which translates to better decision-making and response time in sports. Another impressive finding is that psychedelic substances help people to overcome fear.

The brain undergoes a great “rewiring” after age 40

In the fifth decade of life, our brains start to undergo a radical “rewiring” that results in diverse networks becoming more integrated and connected over the ensuing decades, with accompanying effects on cognition. The networking changes likely result from the brain reorganizing itself to function as well as it can with dwindling resources and aging “hardware.” Proper diet, regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle can keep the mind in good working order and put networking changes on hold, sometimes well into old age.
